Grapevine Vintage Railroad

There is something about a real train ride that lands with kids in a way few attractions do, and the Grapevine Vintage Railroad delivers the genuine article: authentic 1920s-era passenger coaches departing from historic downtown Grapevine, pulled by locomotives with real history. The Trains

Part of the charm here is that the equipment is the real thing. The railroad runs two Victorian-era-style locomotives: “Puffy,” an 1896 steam locomotive, and “Vinny,” a 1953 GP-7 diesel. The passenger cars are restored 1920s coaches, so the ride itself, with the clack of the rails and the vintage interiors, is as much the attraction as the destination.

Routes and Where You Go

The signature excursion is the Cotton Belt Route, a round trip that runs from historic downtown Grapevine to the Fort Worth Stockyards and back, which conveniently links two of the area’s best family stops by rail. Shorter and seasonal excursions run at various times through the year, so check which route is operating on your date.

2026 Season and Schedule

The railroad runs on a seasonal calendar rather than daily, so timing matters:

• Summer: roughly May 30 through August 31, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
• Fall: roughly September 6 through November 23, on Saturday and Sunday.
• Holiday season: late November through December 23.

The 2026 season opened back in February, and the schedule shifts with holidays and special events, so confirm departures on the official site before you plan around it.

Day Out with Thomas

The biggest kid draw of the year is Day Out with Thomas: The Let’s Rock, Let’s Roll Tour, stopping at the Grapevine Vintage Railroad on October 9-11 and 16-18, 2026, with tickets around $26 for ages 1 and up. These dates sell out, so book early if you have a Thomas fan.

Booking and Tips

• Buy in advance. Online ticket sales close at 8:30 a.m. on the morning of each excursion. Day-of tickets are sometimes available at the booth, but availability is not guaranteed, especially for themed rides.
• Arrive early to park in downtown Grapevine and board on time, since departures are scheduled.
• Dress for the season and bring snacks and water, as some cars are open-air and comfort varies by car.
• For groups of more than 12, call ahead for group pricing.
