Dallas Heritage Village | Family History Experience

Dallas Heritage Village lets families walk straight into the 19th century. Set on a tree-shaded 20-acre site in Dallas’s first city park, it is a living-history museum built from the largest collection of 1840s-to-1910 pioneer and Victorian buildings in Texas, moved here from across North Central Texas and restored. Instead of standing in galleries, kids wander real farmhouses, a schoolhouse, a general store, and more, which keeps them moving and curious.

Walking Through 1840 to 1910

The village is an outdoor, walk-through experience, and that format is its secret weapon with children. Each historic structure is furnished to its period, so a walk down the “street” moves you through decades of early Texas life. The open, shaded grounds mean kids can roam between buildings rather than being shushed in a hall, and the setting alone, a green pocket of history near downtown, is a pleasant surprise.

What Kids Actually Do

The village is staffed at various times by History Hosts, interpreters who lead daily activities and answer the “what was it really like?” questions kids inevitably ask. Talking with them is usually the highlight of a visit. Throughout the year the village layers on special events and hands-on workshops, from seasonal celebrations to historical demonstrations, which are worth timing a trip around.

Admission and Hours

• Admission: general admission is free Thursday through Sunday. On other open days a modest charge applies, roughly $5 to $7 for adults depending on the season, with lower rates for seniors and children 3-12. Confirm the current schedule before you go.
• Hours: the grounds are generally open Sunday and Monday noon to 5 p.m., and Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., though buildings can close for maintenance or private events.
• Parking is available on site.

Best Time and What to Bring

Because so much of the visit is outdoors, the cooler morning hours are the most comfortable, especially in summer. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, hats, and sunscreen in warm weather, and allow a couple of hours to wander the full village at an easy pace.
